What you are really looking for is speed. Speed comes from data transfer rate and range. The more data transfer rate, and greater range you have will weigh heavily on the performance of your network. The two major types of routers out there now are “G” and “N” models. The “N” model is newer and provides is capable of more data transfer rate and longer range. Most of your older laptops with only be able to support the “G” model, but will still be compatible with the “N” model. The advantage of purchasing an “N” model is that all new computers that are shipping are coming with an “N” model wireless adapter. It doesn’t make much sense to purchase a “G” model, when you can purchase a newer model for little extra cost. All three gaming consoles are compatible with “N” model routers.
So now you have that hot new wireless router back at your house. What do you do from hear you are wondering. Well before you even open the box, you must find where your broadband modem is connected in your house. Now find a good location that your router can rest away from children or pets. The worst thing to have happen is to be in a middle of a game and have your router disconnected by your children or a pet. You must also consider that it is close to an electrical outlet. Also ensure that your router is within 50 feet of your modem. This is the ideal maximum distance that you want to run your Ethernet cable without losing performance. Now that you have chose a suitable location, go ahead and open your new router.
All new routers will come with an instruction manual. It is always good to read through the instruction manual for general knowledge of your router, although most routers are setup the same, there might be some minor differences. First thing you must do is unplug the power to your modem. Wait at least 10 seconds. Now plug the Ethernet cable that comes from the back of your modem into the port that reads “Modem” on the back of your router. If there is not a port that is labeled on the back of your router, then plug it into ” Port 1″. Now power up your modem. Let your modem run through its test sequence. Once the test is finished then plug in the power to your router. The best way to troubleshoot your router early on is to plug an Ethernet cable from your router to a computer right now. Then log onto the Internet. You should have Internet access immediately. If you do not have an Internet connection, ensure that all cables are properly plugged in and both the modem and router have power. If you still encounter a problem then refer to your owners manual as you might have an issue with your router.
Now that you have an Internet connection through your router, you are ready to go wireless. For this step you must have your computer connected to the router. Ensure that you have an Ethernet cable running from your router to your computer. Power up your computer and connect to the Internet. From here you will enter a specific web site address. The most common address’s are http://192.168.1.1 and http://192.168.0.1. Your owners manual will tell you specifically which web address to type in based on your manufacture. Now that you have connected to the web address you will be prompted to enter a user name and password. You will find your default user name and password in your users manual. Now that you have gained access to your router, the most important thing to do is change your user name and password. All routers are basically the same, you should see a tab that reads, ” Router Config” or something similar. Find this tab and go to change log in. Make your user name and password unique to you. It is possible to change your router settings from outside your home by strangers.
OK, you have made it all the way to setting up the wireless aspect of your router. Find and click on a tab that is similar to ” Basic Wireless Settings”. The first thing that you will be able to do is change your wireless network name. The default name will be the name of your manufacture of the router. You can change it to whatever you would like. After you have named your router, it is time to set up the security. Next, under Wireless Security, turn on WEP encryption. Enter a pass-phrase and click “Generate.” The Key fields will be filled in with a password. Either copy and paste one of these passwords to a text file on your computer OR write it down on a piece of paper that you’ll keep near the router. Anyone who wants to connect to your router will need this password. Be sure to save these settings.
Once your configuration is complete, unplug the cable from your computer to the router. Choose the name you chose for your access point on your computer. The easiest way to do this is open your “Network and sharing center” and select your newly named wireless connection. You should be prompted for a password. Use one of the generated keys you set up earlier. All goes well, you’ll be connected to your wireless router.
